The Dome of the Rock is one of the first domed works known in Islamic architecture. This building was constructed between 689-691 during the caliphate of Abdul Malik. The architects of the building were Yazid Bin Salam from Jerusalem and Raja Bin Haywa from Baysan. The original dome was destroyed in 1015 and rebuilt in 1022-23. The Dome of the Rock is considered to be the first historical monument to reflect the Islamic faith in its dome interior decorations and one of the oldest surviving works of Islamic architecture. Its exterior appearance changed significantly during the Ottoman period and again in the modern period, especially with the addition of the gold-plated roof in 1959-61. 🕌
